Do the kids love nature? Rock Cut State Park is the place to explore thousands of acres of hiking and biking trails, as well as fishing, paddle boating, kayaking, camping, and more. Speaking of paddle boats, Paddle & Trail’s new Regional Activity Center on Windsor Lake give the entire family an opportunity to try out kayaking, fishing, sailing, boating, and paddle boating before taking to the Rock River.
Lockwood Park’s Trailside Equestrian Center and Children’s Farm offers over forty acres of woods and meadows for riders of all skill levels, and features trail rides, pony rides, hayrides, petty farm, riding lessons, and seasonal activities.
The majestic Anderson Japanese Gardens also opens in May. Rated one of the top Japanese gardens in the nation, Anderson Gardens boasts over seven lush acres of serene gardens, waterfalls, and immaculate grounds. A variety of special events take place at the gardens, including Tuesday in the Gardens, a Ravinia-style event that encourages visitors to bring a picnic basket while they listen to live music.
Looking for something indoors? Burpee Museum and the Discovery Center Children’s Museum will open an exhibit at the end of May called “Treasure!” The exhibit will feature 5,000 square feet of artifacts, hands-on activities, videos, biographies, and tales from around the world. Delve into the technology employed by treasure hunters and focus on the people and personalities lured by the promise of prosperity. Be enticed by shipwreck and treasure site artifacts, and learn to use the tools you’d need to find a fortune!
Speaking of artifacts, step back in time at Midway Village Museum. This living history museum features a full scale Victorian-era village comprised of 26 historical buildings. A 52,700 sq ft main museum center features seven exhibition galleries, including the history of the sock monkey, originally created right here in Rockford, Illinois!
